COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland Art Gallery has acquired The Skinwalker Ranch Series, 20102016, a collection of more than 1,500 digital images by photographer Chris Bartel, taken during his time working in security operations at the property. The images offer a rare glimpse into the mystique surrounding the secluded ranch, known not only for its deep cultural ties to the surrounding Native American nations but also as the epicenter of U.S. government-sponsored research into topics such as UFOs and other paranormal phenomena.

“The photographs build upon the university’s collection of art documenting the American West and will further scholarly understanding of this art historical genre,” said University of Maryland Art Gallery Associate Director Taras W. Matla.

“From the Lewis and Clark Expedition to the Hayden Geological Survey of 1871, artists have played a central role in survey and intelligence work documenting the American West,” said Matla. “Bartel is definitely influenced by this tradition and the visual language he creates thoughtfully builds from it.”

In 2015, the Art Gallery received a significant gift of photogravures by noted painter and photographer William Henry Jackson (1843-1942), including images linked to numerous U.S. government-sponsored expeditions.

“I appreciate the incredible platform the UMD Art Gallery is providing me with,” said Bartel. “I am beyond thrilled to publicly share my vision and past experiences during my time at Skinwalker Ranch. It’s beyond humbling.”

The digital photo archive will be made open for use to members of the scholarly and museum communities (e.g., university faculty, graduate students, curators) with proof of current institutional affiliation. Access will also be granted to credentialed members of the media and independent researchers with specific projects or interests as warranted.

An exhibition is planned for early 2021, assuming COVID-19 concerns allows for in-person visitation.

“Titled ‘Christopher Bartel: The Skinwalker Ranch Portfolio,’ it will be a selection of eighty photos selected by both Chris and me that best represents the totality of his series,” Matla said.

A former United States Air Force veteran, Bartel has spent more than two decades working in security operations at some of the nation’s top military instillations. Complementing his professional life is a love of and devotion to photography. Bartel lives and works in Wichita, Kansas.
