Herman Maril Teaching & Research Gallery

The Herman Maril Teaching & Research Gallery honors the enduring legacy of artist and educator Herman Maril.

A Dynamic Environment for Cross-Disciplinary Learning

Named in honor of renowned modernist painter and longtime UMD Department of Art professor Herman Maril, this gallery celebrates his dual role as artist and instructor. Maril's belief in the power of close looking and thoughtful engagement with artworks continues to inspire generations of students and faculty.

Designed as a flexible, interdisciplinary teaching space, the gallery features dedicated wall space, a curated display case, flat files, and a specialized viewing platform. These elements support an immersive experience with original works from the university’s permanent collection—free from the typical constraints of traditional exhibition environments. Whether used in studio art instruction or across fields that value visual analysis, the Herman Maril Teaching & Research Gallery fosters a deeper understanding of art as both subject and method of study.
