Legacy in Lines: Prints and Drawings from the Martin W. Brown Collection

In 1955, the Department of Art, which at the time included both Art History and Studio Art, received a transformative gift of over one hundred prints and drawings from Martin W. Brown. Spanning works from Rembrandt van Rijn to early twentieth-century American artists such as Peggy Bacon, Thomas Hart Benton, Rockwell Kent, and Grant Wood, the collection was intended to provide students with opportunities for object-based study, exemplifying Brown's commitment to higher education.

A native of New York City, Martin Brown moved to the College Park area with his wife Sylvia and their two children for a job opportunity. His decision to donate much of his private art collection to the University of Maryland highlighted the importance of access to original and significant works of art, and it emphasized the need for a world-class academic museum on campus. This vision ultimately led to the establishment of the University of Maryland Art Gallery a decade later.

Legacy in Lines showcases highlights from the Martin W. Brown Collection, demonstrating his appreciation for the diversity of subject matter and printmaking techniques. This exhibition not only honors his enduring legacy and generosity but also recognizes the continued contributions of his children, Larry Brown and Debi [Brown] Saxton, whose additional gifts of art and financial support have played a vital role in the Art Gallery’s growth, public engagement, and success.

This exhibition is co-organized by Director Taras W. Matla and Curatorial Assistant Patricia Ortega, with administrative support from Program Administrative Specialist Charisma Oparaugo, budgetary support from Business Manager Andrea Huicy, and design and installation led by Preparator Korey Richardson.
