Todd Gray: Another Part of Me

March 7, 2018

In 2008, artist Todd Gray traveled to Ghana, West Africa, where he photographed people in a remote village holding images of Michael Jackson. The project, using images culled from Gray's vast archive of photographs that he took during his time as MJ's personal photographer in the 1980's, sought to metaphorically bring Michael back to his ancestral home as both a celebrity icon and an outsider. Ten years later, Todd Gray: Another Part of Me builds upon Gray's original concept with a stop at the University of Maryland, College Park. Willing participants will have the opportunity to pose with images he took in Ghana for a unique project that will be documented, shared, and archived via his Instagram account @toddgrayla.

This project is in association with the exhibition Portraits of Who We Are, on view through May 18th at the David C. Driskell Center. Financial support to the University of Maryland Art Gallery and the David C. Driskell Center is provided by generous grants from the Maryland State Arts Council.
