Emilio Sánchez x Lost Sock Roasters

What do coffee and art have in common? Conversation.

the University of Maryland Art Gallery has partnered with Lost Sock Roasters to present the work of artist Emilio Sánchez (Cuba, active United States, 1921–1999). The prints displayed on this wall are on loan from the Art Gallery’s permanent collection and demonstrate the artist’s signature style—brightly hued architectural structures that showcase the color palette of traditional Caribbean architecture. Central to his work is the idea of “place,” both literally and figuratively.

Although born in Cuba, Sánchez spent most of his life in the United States. The long and foreboding shadows cast by bright sunlight onto building facades, windows, shutters, and doors suggest a deep admiration for New York realist painters such as Edward Hopper. The work also evokes Sánchez’s fondness for his own ethnic origins as well as a metaphorical exploration of his gay identity.
